Using Camtasia Studio: Creating Simple Screencasts

What the Model Specifies

Following the Dick & Carey Model, the "Implementation" stage is the process of actually using the materials and strategies in context. Because Dick & Carey incorporates ongoing revision throughout the design process, including during "Implementation," formative evaluation is a part of this stage. Reflecting this, our tutorial underwent a number of revisions between its prototype and completion for the Implementation stage. These changes focused primarily on completing the content sections -- moving from powerpoints to a combination of powerpoints and narrated screencasts. Additionally, refinements were made to the appearance of the site, some pages were consolidated, additional content was added to supplemental pages, and a pdf version of the tutorial was developed and added.

To address the ability to evaluate both the product design and learner outcomes, we incorporated a means of obtaining both formative and summative evaluation input from the users via an online survey in which we ask for feedback both on the design of the tutorial and questions designed to assess the level of "learning" achieved by those who completed the tutorial. The survey, which is linked to the tutorial on a tab in the right-hand navigation, can be accessed directly here.

The Implementation Plan

Due to her role within the USC College of Education, Catherine serves as the communication liaison with the learner group, all of whom are faculty and staff members who are previously familiar with her. An initial email communication was sent to a large percentage of faculty within the College and from that solicitation for volunteers, twelve individuals indicated a willingness to try the tutorial and provide feedback. This group of twelve has since been sent a follow-up email that:
  • informs them that the tutorial is available;
  • provides them with the link to the tutorial;
  • encourages them to use the tutorial within the timeframe specified;
  • thanks them for their participation;
  • and encourages them to contact Catherine should they have any questions or concerns.

Due to prior knowledge of the learner group and their access to resources, it is anticipated that all who volunteered will have access to the software either through a previous University installation or the free trial and that most of them will complete it within their personal office spaces rather than in the computer lab, which is available to them if needed. It was previously determined that the user group exclusively uses Windows PCs during the weekday, which is when their use of the tutorial is most likely to occur.

It is anticipated that at approximately the mid-point of the Implementation Phase, this first communication will be followed by a similar one that will hopefully include initial positive feedback comments from users as a further encouragement to those who might not yet have completed the tutorial or provided feedback. At the completion of the Implementation Phase, data from the evaluation survey will be compiled within Google docs for use in possible further revision to the tutorial and for use in documenting completion of the assignment's progression through the Dick & Carey design model.
