The Dick & Carey Model characterizes the Design Stage as follows:
Design
Write Performance Objectives
Develop Assessment Instruments
Design is the process of specifying how the material is to be learned. The general goals are specified in performance objectives or learning outcomes.
Assessments are created to determine if these objectives are reached.
In keeping with the model, the Performance Objectives are listed below, along with the planned strategy for assessment, a mock-up of the Web site that will present the tutorial and the storyboard on which the planned site will be built.

Performance Objectives:

Using Camtasia software:1. The learner will be able to locate and identify the key features and controls needed for screen capture with 90% or greater accuracy.2. The learner will be able to correctly locate and identify the key features and controls needed for capture editing with 90% or greater accuracy.3. The learner will be able to correctly identify and sequence the steps needed for video publishing and sharing via a link to a hosted site and via a page embed.

Learner Assessment:

Besides written evaluations, a simple hands-on project is used to determine if the learner has mastered the concept of screencasting and the use of Camtasia. The learner needs to create a screencast video of a simple task. The task should be something basic and common across computer platforms, such as doing a Google search. While the specific task is not important, it should be basic enough so that it does not distract from the skills being learned.

Example Assignment

Part 1: Capture

Using TechSmith Camtasia, create and upload a simple screencast of the following procedure:
  1. Open a web browser
  2. Navigate to Google by typing “http://www.google.com” into the web address.
  3. Enter a search term into the box. Click Google Search.
  4. View the web search results.

Part 2: Edit

Edit the screen cast
  1. Trim excess video from the beginning and end.
  2. Use SmartFocus to zoom from full screen to the navigation bar on step 2 above.
  3. Place an arrow pointing to the search term box.
  4. Use SmartFocus to zoom to the search term box (and arrow) on step 3 above.
  5. Fade out the video at the end.

Part 3: Upload

Upload the finished video to YouTube or screencast.com
  1. Create a free account, if necessary.
  2. Upload the video, copying the URL provided.
  3. Submit the URL.
